Exodus 20:3–6
When we hear the term “silent killer,” we often think of high blood pressure or carbon monoxide poisoning—dangerous conditions that operate undetected until it’s too late. But many years ago, during a time of prayer, the Lord revealed to me another silent killer—one that creeps in unnoticed, yet has the power to destroy dreams, friendships, marriages, and even ministries.
That silent killer is social media.
The Enemy in the Airwaves
The Lord told me plainly: “He’s coming through the airwaves.”
In the past, “airwaves” referred to radio and television—mediums used to communicate and broadcast messages widely. Today, social media has become the modern-day airwaves, an ever-present stream of content flowing through our phones, tablets, and minds.
What began as a tool for connection—finding old friends, sharing family moments, staying informed—has subtly shifted. It has become a source of distraction, division, obsession, and idolatry.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
— Exodus 20:3
What Was Meant for Good…
Social media was never inherently evil. Like many tools, it had good intentions. But the enemy, subtle as he is, twists what’s good and uses it for harm. Just like a silent killer, social media addiction creeps in quietly and slowly, until we realize we’re spiritually sick, emotionally empty, or relationally broken.
We scroll endlessly, comparing our lives to others.
We neglect responsibilities, spiritual disciplines, and real-life relationships.
We become preoccupied, hiding our usage and escaping into curated realities.
We lose interest in the things of God.
And we wonder why we feel distant from Him.
Social media addiction, much like gambling or other compulsive behaviors, alters our attention, weakens our self-control, and conditions us to seek affirmation from likes and followers instead of God.
And when anything takes God’s place in our hearts, it becomes an idol.
The Truth About Idolatry
“Do not make for yourself an idol… You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”
— Exodus 20:4–5
Let’s be honest: If we’re spending more time scrolling than seeking, more time posting than praying, and more time engaging online than in the Word—we’ve bowed to a false god.
That may be hard to hear, but it’s truth. Idolatry doesn’t always look like golden calves—it can look like glowing screens.
Come Back While You Still Can
The good news is this: God is still calling us back.
“Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord. — Malachi 3:7
God, in His mercy, still provides a way of escape. But we must choose to take it. We must unplug, disconnect, and return to reality and relationship with Him.
It’s time to silence the silent killer.
To dethrone every idol.
To hunger for God more than we hunger for attention.
To spend more time in the Word than on a wall.
To seek affirmation in His presence, not in our posts.
Final Word
Don’t let what was designed to connect you be the very thing that kills your marriage, your ministry, or more importantly your connection with God.
Social media doesn’t have to be your silent killer. But you have to stop flirting with it. Flee. Reclaim your focus. Reclaim your faith. Reclaim your life.
